Grand prix ( 01) ac compressor bad?

I have a 2001 grand prix GT, bought the car in Feb. so naturally i couldn't tell if the A/C was working cause it was fricking cold outside. i went to Auto Zone and purchased the ac charge kit. used the gauge and nothing was in the system, charged it to the safe lvl, still no cold air. Next I read some forums and checked to see if the clutch was kicking on , I used the relay to see if it engaged, it did. so what do i do next, can i jump it ? or is the clutch spinning a sign that its working . i guess is there anyone that can point me in the right direction or tell me what small things i can do to narrow down what the prob could be .
